Outsourced ISO 9001 Internal Audits
The standard says internal audits must be objective. In a 15-person shop that's nearly impossible from the inside, and auditing your own work is the finding registrars love to write.
Why shops outsource this
- Independence, solved. Nobody on your payroll audits their own department, because the auditor isn't on your payroll.
- Findings before the registrar finds them. A real internal audit is a dress rehearsal, not a formality. We write the nonconformity now so the registrar doesn't write it in your certificate file later.
- Your people stay on the floor. Training an internal auditor and freeing them up twice a year costs more than most shops admit.
- Fresh eyes that see many systems a year. The drift you've stopped noticing is the first thing we notice.
What the engagement looks like
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Plan | Audit schedule mapped to your processes and the full clause set, as one annual audit or split across the year |
| Audit | Records sampled, people interviewed, floor walked the way a registrar would. Remote or on-site |
| Report | Findings graded (major/minor/opportunity), written in registrar-ready format, delivered within five business days |
| Close | Corrective-action coaching until findings actually close, not just a report tossed over the wall |

Common questions
Is outsourcing internal audits allowed under ISO 9001?
Explicitly yes. The standard requires audits to be objective and impartial. It doesn't care whether the auditor is an employee. Registrars see outsourced internal audits constantly and generally read them as a strength in small shops.
How often do we need one?
Every process, at least annually, is the safe baseline. Most small shops do one annual full-system audit plus a lighter touch before the surveillance visit.
Can this be part of a bigger arrangement?
Yes. the audit program is included in the fractional quality manager tiers, which is the better deal if you also need the system maintained between audits.
